Why the Moon Looks Huge Near the Horizon

WHY THE MOON LOOKS HUGE NEAR THE HORIZON

The size can fool you. The photograph offers a useful check.

There is a particular kind of disappointing photograph: the one you take after telling somebody to look at the Moon.

In person, it seems enormous. On the screen, it has become a modest white dot with very little interest in supporting your story.

If you were admiring a Moon low over rooftops or trees, you may have encountered the Moon illusion. It can appear dramatically larger near the horizon than higher in the sky, even though its measured width changes very little during that rise. [C1]

The surprising part is how much remains unsettled. NASA describes the illusion as a feature of visual perception, but says there is no fully satisfying explanation for exactly how it works. Ideas involving perceived distance and the surrounding landscape are explanations under discussion, not a closed case. [C1]

This is a useful distinction: scientists can establish that an effect is an illusion without having completely explained the experience of it.

And you can investigate the size claim yourself.

NASA's photographic demonstration compares a low Moon and a higher Moon photographed on the same evening. Their horizontal diameters match closely. The low Moon can look flattened because atmospheric refraction changes its shape, but that is different from enlarging it into the giant disk you thought you saw. [C2]

To try a similar comparison, photograph the Moon near the horizon and again later that night, keeping the same lens and zoom. Compare its horizontal width in the original images, using the same display scale. Do not enlarge one picture to make a nicer composition. A tiny difference is possible as Earth's rotation changes your distance from the Moon; the test concerns the much more dramatic apparent enlargement. [C2]

You do not need a beautiful photograph for this. A slightly unglamorous pair with consistent settings is more useful than two magnificent images taken at different magnifications.

There is another complication worth separating out: the Moon really can appear a little larger at some times than at others.

Its orbit is not a perfect circle, so its distance from Earth varies. A full Moon near the closer part of its orbit is commonly called a supermoon. That involves a real difference in apparent size compared with a more distant full Moon. It is not the same phenomenon as a Moon seeming to shrink while climbing away from the horizon. [C3]

Think of them as two different questions. How far away is the Moon during this part of its orbit? And how large does it seem in this particular view? The answers can both matter without being interchangeable.

As for spectacular photographs of a giant Moon beside a building, a long lens and carefully chosen viewpoint can create that composition. They are not necessarily showing the scene at the scale of an ordinary wide view. [C1]

None of this requires you to stop saying “Look at the Moon.” A measurement is answering one question; your delight is answering another.

The next time the picture fails to support your enthusiasm, you have a better response than blaming the phone: “Come outside. You'll want to see this.”
