Food Noise Explained: Why You Think About Food All Day

Why Me?

According to a National Geographic article in 2024 up to 90% of people occasionally experience Food Noise. So,  it’s not just you, or me as I used to believe.  However, the severity differs for everyone. Approximately 57% of obese or overweight people experience severe food noise that disrupts their daily life.

The simplified explanation of food noise is cognitive overload. When we become stressed, tired, bored, unhappy, if you are someone who has used food as a coping mechanism our brains begin to see this as a quick way to soothe us. Remember our brains’ most immediate function is to protect us. Stress puts a heavy strain on our nervous system, so the brain finds YOUR personal quickest coping strategies and sets them into motion. We must retrain our brains by implementing consistent improved coping strategies.

In my experience quieting the food noise allowed me to focus on accomplishing my goals and desires. I believe I had severe Food Noise.
